Our Advantage

Pickerington, Ohio Tutoring Service

There are several choices available for your child, and we want to make sure you have an opportunity to make the choice that's in your child's best interest. For instance, many schools provide after-school tutoring or intervention programs for students who are having difficulty in school. Even though these programs are free to families, they focus mostly on completing your child's homework and can't offer you a permanent solution.

While home tutoring may be convenient, under most circumstances it will not solve the underlying problems causing your child to do poorly at school. Home tutoring is a “short- term fix”. Most families complain that even though home tutoring is convenient, it is inconsistent with too many distractions for students. Children become tiresome and bored. There is no system in place to track student progress.

TUTOR CENTER’S UNIQUE PERSONALIZED EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM based on OHIO ACADEMIC CONTENT STANDARDS and incorporating NCTM and NCTE guidelines, builds the academic skills necessary for long term academic success.

We feel strongly that in today's competitive academic environment, every child requires some form of outside academic assistance - whether they are having difficulty or are not excelling in the classroom. When you enroll with us you'll help turn your child's future from a day-to-day challenge into a lifelong success story.

Whether you're looking to help your child catch up, keep up or get ahead in studies, TUTOR CENTER can help. Individual instruction is offered to students from kindergarten to college in the following academic areas.

READING
If students cannot read effectively, they are likely to encounter difficulty with social studies, science, and even math. In fact, reading comprehension skills are critical for success in every facet of life.

Our Master Reading program has the following key components that teach students the strategic skills to overcome academic frustrations and meet their full potential:

  • Word Attack - Phonics / Word Analysis/ Structural Analysis
  • Vocabulary Development
  • Comprehension Strategies / Oral Reading / Reading Rate
Word Attack
Students learn decoding skills by beginning at a comfortable level, which is established during our Skills Assessment Analysis. Phonics skills are the cornerstone of reading, enabling students to accurately sound out words they have not already memorized. Students will learn phonics skills such as letter recognition, letter formation, consonant sounds, short vowels, blends and digraphs, long vowels, R & L modified vowels, variant and irregular vowels, compound words, syllabication, and roots and affixes. The rules of phonics are taught explicitly and systematically; as one skill is mastered, a new one is introduced. As appropriate, sight words are incorporated, structural analysis of words is stressed, and word families may be utilized.

Comprehension
A student is started with material he can read successfully and comfortably. One by one, critical comprehension skills are taught explicitly to the student. Throughout this instruction, the student is taught strategies such as visualization, using context clues, finding the main idea, making inferences, drawing conclusions, finding facts, detecting the sequence, and scanning for information. As a student's ability and confidence grows, so do the lengths of the passages and the complexity of the reading material. Students can also learn strategies for approaching different content areas in reading such as literature, science and textbooks.

Vocabulary
Vocabulary development is critical for middle school and high school students who are college-bound and will be taking the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) /ACT tests. Students learn word meaning and relationships, root words, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, context clues and gain the skills they need to decipher an unlimited amount of words.

Oral Reading
Students are asked to read orally on a regular basis. Through repetition and practice, tutors provide reading help which solidifies accuracy, fluency and self-confidence in reading skills.

Spelling
Spelling instruction is approached phonetically, focusing on the structural principles of words most needed in writing. The instruction is systematic and direct, with attention also given to high frequency words that do not follow specific patterns.

Through practice and mastery of these reading skills, students will have the reading help they need to move ahead with more complex materials. Our tutors employ a wide variety of lessons and formats in order to provide reading help and cater to the individual learning style of each student. The cumulative effect is a child who can read and whose confidence soars.

WRITING
To be successful in school and beyond, all students need to have adequate skills for written expression. Even in today's electronic world, the importance of the ability to properly express one’s-self in writing is not only paramount for academic success but for success throughout life as well.

In addition, many of the mandated standardized tests utilized by school districts now require students to demonstrate writing proficiency. At the Center, a comprehensive writing program is designed to meet each student's individual needs.

Our Master Writing program includes:
  • Sentence / Paragraph structure and organization
  • Writing mechanics / Grammar / Language usage
  • Composition skills / Writing in the content areas
  • Letter formation / Penmanship
Additionally, the use of Rubrics (which are commonly used by teachers for evaluating and scoring writing) are also taught so students understand how their work can benefit from self and peer evaluation. Journal writing is also incorporated into each session to build confidence and effectiveness in everyday writing

MATH
Many students fall victim to math anxiety throughout their education simply because they have not been afforded the time and the repetition they require to master new skills and apply concepts. Other students are not sufficiently challenged by their school math programs and need opportunity for enrichment. At the center, we are committed to addressing both these types of needs. Math tutoring is based on each student's specific needs, from remedial to enrichment levels.

Our Comprehensive Math Assessment uses a battery of tests to identify the strengths and weaknesses a student has in the conceptual understanding of mathematics and to assess level of accuracy and efficiency in computation. An in-depth analysis of the test results is done and a personalized learning program is developed to address his or her academic needs. This process allows students to go back and build foundation needed for success in basic math, as well as advanced courses such as Algebra and Geometry.

Tutor Center’s Master Math program is based on Ohio Academic Content Standards, incorporates National Council of Teachers of Mathematics guide lines and uses nationally recognized materials. This program offers proven instruction in math, ranging from basic math help to pre-algebra, and algebra help. Lessons for all math levels use a variety of proven teaching methods. These include paper and pencil activities as well as the incorporation of manipulatives to provide hands-on activity to aid in learning abstract concepts. Our Math Program helps students learn core math skills of basic math facts fluency, computation, and concepts & applications. Mastering these skills provides students with the math help they need for advancement to higher level math classes.

Basic Math Facts fluency - Students learn and master basic single digit operations in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Our tutors provide the math help your child needs to develop accuracy and speed which translates into confidence and success as he or she progresses. These basic math skills provide the foundation for math comprehension that will lead to success as the student moves on to more complex math operations.

Computation - Key computation skills are taught in the areas of whole number operations, fractions, decimals, and at some levels, integers, percentages, and pre-algebraic expressions.

Concepts & Applications - Critical thinking skills such as reasoning, logic and problem solving take students beyond the basics of mathematical computation. The specific math skills learned include: numeration, fraction concepts, decimal concepts, estimating, basic measurement concepts, geometry measurement concepts, problem solving, exponents, graphics, probability and statistics, and ratios.
  • At the elementary and middle school levels, instruction can include:
Number Facts, Computation, Fractions, Decimals, Percents, Word Problems, Geometry

  • At the middle school to college level, instruction can include:
Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus

STUDY SKILLS
It's not just about how long a student studies, but how he or she studies. The effectiveness of a student’s study skills can mean the difference between failure and success. Many students who WANT to learn have difficulty in school, often because they do not know HOW to learn. Even bright students can be hampered by poor study skills when they reach courses that challenge their abilities.

Our study skills program enables students to overcome difficulties by improving the effectiveness of their learning. By showing students the best methods and techniques for test taking, time management and organization, we give them the competitive edge they need to succeed in school and beyond. Throughout our study skills program we encourage students to bring in their book bag with agenda, notebooks, and textbooks, in order to start applying proper study habits to their personal materials and assignments. This program is especially valuable for the middle school and the high school student trying to manage an increasing workload. The study skills program can be combined with homework help and support when appropriate.

Our study skills program covers several key areas:
  • Organization of space and materials
  • Time management
  • Reading and study strategies
  • Effective note taking methods
  • Test taking strategies and techniques
  • Following directions
Tutor Center's Study Skills program is personalized, so a student can start anytime.

SUPPORT WITH SCHOOL WORK
Students struggle with homework because of:

  • A deficiency in a fundamental area such as reading, writing, or math.
  • A need for individualized extra help understanding new concepts until they can do homework independently.
At tutor Center, we offer assistance with current school assignments WHILE re-teaching or reinforcing concepts a student has not mastered in the past, as determined by our Skills Assessment. We provide immediate support with difficult subjects or assignments to help them raise grades and build confidence in the PRESENT. For such school support, we use the student's own textbooks and materials. AT THE SAME TIME, we use our own materials to provide supplemental instruction to correct any knowledge gaps the student may have and to build a firm foundation for new concepts.

This dual approach allows students to have immediate results in their academic performance while building a strong foundation. Parents also benefit as homework struggles are eliminated at home, and children become more positive, independent, and successful in school. This complete academic support can benefit the gifted student, the student with learning difficulties, or the student who is just not working to potential.

ENRICHMENT
Many high performing students are not eligible for the gifted programs in their schools, or such programs may not even exist.

For the highly capable student, this can lead to boredom and even frustration. At Tutor Center, our enrichment programs offer such students appropriately challenging instruction, exposure to above grade level material, and opportunity for higher learning.

As part of our enrichment services, we can begin preparing middle school students for the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test). Parents who choose this program for their children are wise to take maximum advantage of the time that is needed to build strong comprehension, vocabulary, math and writing skills well in advance of the test date!

SUMMER PROGRAMS
Recent studies have shown that kids can lose an average of one month of learning over the summer. We offer a variety of summer programs that can help children catch up, keep up, or get ahead while making sure your child enjoys the learning process. At TUTOR CENTER, we prove that when learning is fun, kids will love to learn. Our summer programs are the ultimate way to help your child make significant summer progress.

STANDARDIZED TEST PREPARATION
Annual standardized testing is the reality faced by practically every student, from the elementary through the high school years. Such testing can often be stressful for students who are unfamiliar with the ever-changing test format. At Tutor Center, individual instruction is offered to prepare students for the following standardized tests:

Students learn to:
  • Deal with test anxiety
  • Develop test-preparation plans
  • Apply test-taking strategies to essay, short response and multiple-choice tests
Ohio Achievement Tests / Ohio Graduation Test
Students are introduced to the format of the test, and are instructed how to approach objective questions and how to maximize their performance on open-ended questions that require written responses. Because these tests are cumulatve, appropriate test content is reviewed, and any areas of weakness are identified and reinforced. Students are given the opportunity to practice taking sample tests, under timed conditions if appropriate. Such preparation results in reduced anxiety and increased success on these important tests.

Tutor Center also offers individual AND small group instructions for these examinations.

SAT II Subject Tests - Math Level IC, Levell II C, AP Physics, AP Chemistry

GED (General Educational Development)

SSAT / ISEE (Private high school entrance exams)
